Interview with Victoria Hodson, co-author of Discover Your Child’s Learning Style, about the difference it can make when a students’ learning style is recognized and celebrated.
Dehesa Charter School is a K-12 publicly-funded school with a mission to provide personalized learning so that students may develop skills and knowledge necessary for success in an ever-changing world. With 1200 students throughout San Diego, Riverside, and Orange Counties, no two students' learning plans are the same. Teachers customize curriculum and instruction through the use of a learning styles profile and a variety of resources. Students are encouraged to use primary and community resources, utilize their talents and interests, and connect with mentors to make learning meaningful and memorable.
Terri Novacek, Executive Director of Dehesa Charter School, has worked in education nearly thirty years in a variety of settings and with all grade levels. The impact of a personalized approach to education became evident to her when she resigned from teaching after ten years in the classroom to run her own tutoring business and home-school her own children. As a school administrator, she is passionate about cultivating a learning community where the teacher serves as a "guide by the side" rather than "sage on the stage" to empower students to take the lead in their learning.
