Experience demonstrates that if done in earnest and truth, both subjects should reinforce and advance our culture in a positive way. The lie is that these are mutually exclusive and in conflict.
In the absence of fact, opinion rules. It seems that the one who is loudest wins the argument. No it just means they are loud and wrong. Our culture has been bombarded more by opinion than fact, and my question is, "How's that working for you, and all of us?" As Ronald Reagan has said, "Facts are stubborn things."
My Hope and prayer is that together we can advance the cause of truth in one another, our families, our communities, our country and the world. No doubt this is a lofty goal and I need your help to engage in the facts, and keep me accountable.
Welcome to the conversation and please know that I need your input and participation. Let's hear you on the radio.
Life has come full circle for Bill Martinez. In 1970, he was a hit DJ on Orange County's KWIZ/1480 AM - the station once known for its slogan "Top Banana - Best of the Bunch." His career took him to KDAY and Wolfman Jack, KIIS (he was hired by Charlie Tuna), KRLA and Art Laboe, KIK-FM and Art Astor.
Along the way, in about 1985, he met Rich Buhler and changed the direction of his life. "I thought maybe God wanted me to do something different, I went back to Biola College and got my degree in theology."
Fast forward to 2010 and Martinez was at Costa Mesa-based Christian talk station KBRT as a consultant and host of his own 11 a.m.-noon Saturday program on 740 AM. He was even called on to fill in often for Rich Buhler on the latter's "Talk from the Heart" weekday 3-5 p.m. program.
Today Bill is the host of a new national show, "Bill Martinez Live," Which is aired (beginning October 31st) across the nation via satellite from 6-8 ET.
Martinez and his wife have five children, six grandchildren and live in Huntington Beach, but also have a home in Jenson Beach, Florida. He reveled in the early career days. "I was in the Marines, doing public affairs at Camp Pendleton during the week, then worked three different weekend shifts at KWIZ when it was at the world-famous Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana." His on-air pals included Tony St. James, Spider MacLean, Earl Trout III and Bruce Phillip Miller.
"I stayed at KWIZ until I got out of the Marine Corps, then I was offered to go to KDAY and work with Wolfman Jack, which I did from 1973-75," he said. Along the way, he met Patty Weaver, whose dad Bill owned KWIZ. "We got married, a son Michael came around, and we were together for 13 years. She is a great gal."
Charlie Tuna hired Martinez to be assistant program director at KIIS where, he said, "We did a lot of community outreach, including playing baseball at Dodger Stadium with the cast and crew of 'Happy Days.'
"During that time, I worked from 7 to 10 at night and started doing some commercials. We helped make Waterbed Gallery a household name in the '80s. That's when I met Rich Buhler. He was with the guys from Biola. The Waterbed group were all Biola graduates," he said.
He left KIIS for KRLA and Laboe, but found himself spending more time in marketing and running his own company until 1991. That was when he went back to college to get his theology degree. "That didn't play out the way I thought it would," he said. "We were in a recession, so I called Art Astor at KIK-FM and worked for him until 2000 when Salem hired me to run KIEV."
"Two significant things happened - Infinity dropped the well-known KRLA call letters, making them available to Salem, which used them to replace the KIEV name. Second was when Dennis Prager exited KABC and Salem picked him up. The station took off from there, seeing double digit increases. It was a great run."
Martinez came full circle back to Buhler and KBRT when he began managing the Dr. Bob Marshall "Healthline" program, which also airs on KBRT Saturday mornings. Martinez started his own weekend show. Featuring pastor sermons, he said the goal is to reveal "the truth about God. There is so much information going on out there, it is important to discern what is the truth and what is the lie."
Now Bill Martinez is the host of "Bill Martinez Live," heard nationwide in over 150 markets. The show airs (beginning October 31st) from 6-8 PM ET.
